SUMMARY:2026 Mental Health Symposium: Sheryl Swoopes & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \nThe 2nd Annual Mental Health Symposium brings together music\, mental wellness\, and motivation in an unforgettable event led by WNBA and Basketball Legend Sheryl Swoopes. A 2016 Nasmith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Swoopes has broken barriers in music\, fashion\, culture and basketball worldwide. Beyond the basketball\, her journey has been deeply personal and inspiring\, and we are pleased to host this Q&A and community discussion. \nSheryl Swoopes \nThe first woman to ever be signed to the WNBA. First woman to have a signature shoe with Nike. Olympian\, WNBA MVP\, and WNBA champion. What hasn’t Sheryl Swoopes done? \nWomen’s professional basketball is still a relatively new thing in the United States. For someone like Sheryl Swoopes\, the role models and heroines she looked up to on the basketball court usually made their legends in the college ranks\, before falling into obscurity after the conclusion of their amateur tenures or going off to play in Europe until the Olympics every four years. Despite the question mark surrounding the chance to make a name for herself in the sport that she loved\, Sheryl Swoopes always knew that basketball was her passion. At just seven years old\, she played little league basketball in her native Brownfield\, TX. In high school\, she played for the Brownfield Cubs\, where she grew to a full six feet tall. As a senior\, Swoopes led the Cubs with 26.7 and 13 rebounds per game en route to a Class 3A All-State selection and a second-team Parade All-American nod. \nAfter high school\, Swoopes played two years at South Plains Community College (Levelland\, TX) where her 1\,381 total points in just two years set the career scoring mark between the years 1975-1991\, where the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) only had one division for women’s basketball. Her prolific offensive prowess did not stop in Levelland\, because after two years she transferred to Texas Tech. The school’s website hails her as the “most decorated athlete in Texas Tech history.” The praise is justified; in her senior season alone Swoopes scored 28.1 points per game while leading the Lady Raiders to Southwest Conference regular season and tournament championships\, respectively\, and the NCAA Championship in 1993. Sheryl Swoopes’ name is on 30 total NCAA women’s basketball records as a Lady Raider\, as well as the school’s single game points record\, 53. In 1994\, Texas Tech retired Sheryl Swoopes’ No. 22 jersey\, and she was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2003. \nIn 1995\, while playing for Basket Bari\, an Italian club team\, Swoopes made history by becoming the first woman to have a signature athletic shoe with Nike. The shoe\, called the Air Swoopes\, helped pave the way for more female athletes to receive shoe deals like Nike’s Dawn Staley and A’ja Wilson\, as well as Adidas’ Candace Parker. According to kickstory\, a shoe and style based website\, the original Air Swoopes were designed to be lighter and less bulky than men’s shoes at the time\, fit for Sheryl’s game. The shoes also used Nike’s latest and greatest technology to offer unparalleled ankle support. There were seven total iterations of the Air Swoopes line\, with the last being the Nike Air Tuned Swoopes\, released in 1999. \nWhen the WNBA held their first draft in April 1997\, Swoopes was allocated to the Houston Comets due to her Texas origins. She was also the very first player in the league’s history to sign a contract with a team. Her second seaosn as a pro is where the magic really happened. It was then that Swoopes started a streak of four seasons as a first-team WNBA selection in seasons where she played more than 10 games\, only missing the 2001 season with a torn ACL. In 2002\, her first year back\, Swoopes picked up without missing a beat\, winning both league MVP and Defensive Player of the Year\, scoring 18.5 points and snaring 2.8 steals per game. At the 2011 WNBA All-Star Game\, the year she retired\, she was recognized as one of the WNBA’s 15 greatest players at the time. \nInternationally\, Swoopes starred on the US Women’s National Team\, winning gold at the 1996\, 2000\, and 2004 Olympics\, respectively. She is one of 11 players to win an Olympic gold medal\, FIBA World Cup gold medal\, WNBA\, and an NCAA championship. In 2016\, she was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. \nIn her post-playing career\, Sheryl Swoopes served as an assistant coach at Mercer Island High School (WA) in 2010\, a Texas Tech WBB color analyst (2012-13 and 2017-18 seasons)\, and varying assistant roles on both the Loyola University Chicago and Texas Tech women’s teams. \nIn the basketball space\, Sheryl Swoopes was a trailblazer. Not only was she a dynamic force for decades on the court\, but she paved the path and gave the blueprint for all women that came after her. It is only right that we honor her as the WNBA’s first legend. \nFeaturing Special Guest: Aubrey Massey \nAubrey Massey is a 2026 graduate of Saint Ursula Academy and a dedicated student-athlete in Track & Field. Her athletic journey began in youth AAU track and has provided her with firsthand experience of both the rewards and challenges of competitive athletics. Through her own experiences and those of her peers\, Aubrey has gained a deep understanding of the mental\, emotional\, and social pressures student-athletes face\, including anxiety\, depression\, performance-related stress\, and the challenge of balancing academics\, athletics\, and personal expectations. \nDriven by a passion for supporting fellow athletes\, Aubrey founded Person-Centered Athletic Network (PCAN)\, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creating safe spaces where student-athletes can build confidence\, openly discuss mental health\, and learn how to “cope and compete” without fear or stigma. Through PCAN\, she co-hosted The Athlete: Mental Health Summit\, impacting more than 300 students and bringing together dozens of speakers\, collegiate professionals\, and community leaders. She also leads PCAN’s flagship Ambassador Program\, overseeing a team of 45 trained high school athletes certified in Mental Wellness First Aid who teach social-emotional learning\, leadership\, and conflict resolution to elementary and junior high school students. \nAubrey’s leadership extends beyond her nonprofit work. At Saint Ursula Academy\, she served as Class Vice President throughout all four years of high school and was an active member of the Diversity Advisory Committee\, helping strengthen school culture and advocate for her fellow students. As captain of the Track & Field team\, she demonstrated exceptional leadership while earning six school records. \nThis fall\, Aubrey will continue her academic and athletic career at Robert Morris University\, where she will compete as a Division I track and field athlete. She plans to major in Health Science on the pre-dental track while continuing her commitment to leadership\, service\, and the well-being of student-athletes. \nFeaturing Special Guest: Jonelle Massey \nJonelle Massey is a nationally certified licensed mental health therapist for 20+ years. \nShe received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Xavier University in Cincinnati\, Ohio. Jonelle’s diverse service in education as a former school counselor and psychotherapist includes both public and private\, primary and secondary educational settings\, as well as psychiatric hospital care and private practice. \nMarried to a Division I college basketball coach for 20 years Jonelle adjusts well to relocation and makes an immediate impact with each professional move. As a former Division I athletic scholarship recipient with Xavier University’s women’s basketball program\, Jonelle shares her passion for teaching effective teamwork\, motivation and resilience through an empathetic framework.  \nIn 2023\, Jonelle founded Agility Counseling Group\, a private practice supporting college\, professional and retired athletes. Her strength in leadership is also evident in her professional mental health lectures and workshops presented across the country.  Jonelle consults with college and high school athletic teams in increasing psychological safe team environments that also reinforces accountability.  \nJonelle volunteers on the National Alopecia Areata Foundation governance board for the past 6 years and Toledo’s Alliance of Black Student Educators.  In Spring 2021\, Jonelle published her first book\, “The Miseducation of Empathy”. Her successful debut book that has sold over 3000 copies dismantles traditional ideas about how we should be practicing empathy. A native of Cincinnati\, Ohio\, Jonelle resides in Toledo\, Ohio with her husband\, and Elkhart legend\, Coach Jeff Massey and their two daughters\, Aubrey and Kayla.  \nFeaturing Special Guest: Nathan D. Palmer \n \nNathan D Palmer is a former American football player in the National Football League. He played college football at Northern Illinois University and was named the 2011 MVP of the Mac conference championship game. Palmer signed undrafted free agent contract following the 2012 draft. Palmer has played on a few NFL teams\, including Indianapolis Colts\, Miami Dolphins\, Denver Broncos\, New England Patriots\, Chicago Bears\, Oakland Raiders. \nAfter retiring from the NFL Palmer pursuit a career in music and is currently traveling with the retire\, NFL choir \n\n \n Get Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n Aug \n \n 26 \n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm	\n	\n\n	\n \n\n	Event Series\n	\n	\n	\n\n	\n\n\n \n	\n Art Walk – After Hours: Go 2 Eleven	\n\n \n\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n\n	\n	\n \n Aug \n \n 29 \n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n 7:00 pm	\n	\n \n	\n Celebration Under the Stars featuring Boyz II Men and The Jacksons	\n\n \n\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n\n	\n	\n \n Sep \n \n 12 \n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n 7:30 pm	\n	\n \n	\n Whose Live Anyway?	\n\n \n\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n\n	\n	\n \n Oct \n \n 27 \n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n 7:30 pm	\n	\n \n	\n A Taste of Ireland: The Irish Music & Dance Sensation	\n\n \n\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n\n	\n	\n \n Nov \n \n 8 \n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n 7:00 pm	\n	\n \n	\n Bert Kreischer: Permission to Party	\n\n \n\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n\n	\n	\n \n Nov \n \n 12 \n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n 7:30 pm	\n	\n \n	\n Bored Teachers: “Is It Friday Yet?!” Comedy Tour	\n\n \n\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n\n	\n	\n \n Nov \n \n 22 \n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n 7:00 pm	\n	\n \n	\n Charlie Berens: The Lost and Found Tour	\n\n \n\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n\n	\n	\n \n Nov \n \n 28 \n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n 3:00 pm	\n	\n \n	\n The Nutcracker at The Lerner Theatre	\n\n \n\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n\n \n	\n View Calendar

SUMMARY:Art Walk - After Hours: The Erly
DESCRIPTION:Elkhart Art Walk\n \n Elkhart Music Town\n \n \n \n \n \n INDIE ROCK FROM THE GREAT LAKES! \nNiles\, Michigan’s The Erly came together in late 2017\, founded by vocalist/bassist Collin Mattiford and vocalist/drummer Fran Gleason. Guitarist and vocalist Trevor McDonald soon joined the lineup\, turning a last-minute “musician wanted” ad into a Craigslist success story. The band has since released three albums—Shadows (2018)\, Reckless (2021)\, and Culture Fever (2023)—building a loyal regional following with tracks like “Flame The Main\,” “Red Roof Inn\,” “Hey Amanda\,” and “Jasmine.”\n \nThe band’s trajectory took a sharp turn with the addition of keyboardist Simon Kauffman Hurst and the release of Salem Lights (2024). Featuring the singalong anthem “55 On The Other Side\,” the album propelled The Erly onto the national stage\, where they performed alongside acts like Sixpence None The Richer\, Cracker\, and Max.\n \nBlending structure with spontaneity\, The Erly delivers a “jam-adjacent” live sound that evolves with every performance. SUMMARY:Elkhart County Symphony - ECHOES OF FATE\, PESKIN & TCHAIKOVSKY
DESCRIPTION:A Symphonic Panorama \n“Echoes of Fate\,” March 29\, 2026 at The Lerner Theatre\, presents guest soloist Michail Thompson on trumpet and a challenging\, intriguing\, and expansive range of orchestral experiences \nThe Elkhart County Symphony’s fourth concert of the 2025-26 season\, “Echoes of Fate”—March 29\, 2026 at The Lerner Theatre in Downtown Elkhart—presents an exciting and challenging repertoire and offers a range of memorable orchestral experiences to entertain\, delight\, and intrigue our audience.  \nMichail Thompson\, assistant principal trumpet with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington\, D.C.\, joins the Elkhart County Symphony as the featured guest soloist for Vladimir Peskin’s Trumpet Concerto No. 1 in C Minor\, and the Symphony welcomes the Concord High School Symphony Orchestra for a side-by-side community collaboration. Additionally\, the Symphony performs Tchaikovsky’s renowned Symphony No. 4 in F minor\, Op. 36. \nTrumpeter Michail Thompson has made orchestral debuts with top ensembles including the London Symphony Orchestra\, San Francisco Symphony\, Opera\, and Ballet\, and joined the National Symphony Orchestra as 2nd Trumpet in 2025. Mr. Thompson—who has spent summers as a fellow at storied institutions such as the Tanglewood Music Festival\, Music Academy of the West\, and the National Orchestral Institute—has performed with the Canadian Brass\, won the Vincent Bach Trumpet Competition\, and been a finalist at the National Trumpet Competition. \nMusical elixir\, inspired by tragedy \nRussian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote his solemn and powerful Symphony No. 4 in F minor\, Op. 36 between 1877 and 1878. The work debuted in February of 1878 at a Russian Musical Society concert in Moscow\, with Nikolai Rubinstein as conductor. The fiery\, vast\, and rapturous symphony was met with early criticism\, most specifically from purists who felt the work did not adequately represent Russian musical values. Despite its early mixed reception\, the symphony grew into an orchestral standard\, and—to this day—remains one of the most frequently performed symphonies of the late 19th century. \nTchaikovsky’s personal and professional life was said to be marred by crises and depression. His separation from his mother at a young age for boarding school\, followed by her early death\, and the untimely deaths of family members and friends—including his dear colleague\, the aforementioned Rubinstein—all were contributors. Although celebrated in his lifetime\, Tchaikovsky felt neither beloved nor respected by critics and musical peers. During his life\, the composer—who kept his homosexuality private—endured a failed marriage to Antonina Miliukova\, a failed suicide attempt\, and the gutting collapse of his 13-year association with wealthy patroness Nadezhda von Meck.  \nSimilarly\, Vladimir Peskin’s musical compositions seem born of chaos and tumult. Little is known about Peskin’s life. What is known is that he lived in Geneva from 1914 to 1916 and received music lessons at the Académie de Musique de Genève after his father\, like many other Russian revolutionaries\, was exiled to Switzerland by the Stalin regime. The son of refugees\, Peskin would have to give up his early piano studies due to a hand disability caused by overuse\, at which point he turned primarily to composition. \nExperts suggest Anton Rubinstein as Peskin’s central role model\, and his teacher\, Samuil Feinberg—along with composer Sergei Rachmaninoff—are credited as influences in his well-known works. Peskin’s Trumpet Concerto No. 1 in C Minor has stood the test of time and is considered one of the most enduring trumpet concertos ever composed. \n\n \n Get Elkhart County Symphony Tickets

DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \nThe symphonic world of Hans Zimmer with music from James Bond\, The Lion King\, The Pirates of the Caribbean\, Gladiator\, The Dark Knight\, Inception\, Interstellar\, Top Gun\, Dune and more! \n“The Music of Hans Zimmer & Others” is an unforgettable concert and audiovisual experience for all age groups\, film enthusiasts\, music lovers\, and families. The best music will be performed by the Hollywood Film Orchestra in an impressive show with light installations\, laser projections\, and selected film clips. Star soloists from the Original Broadway Production will perform excerpts from “The Lion King”\, Zimmer’s most beloved box office smash hit. \nNo other composer has influenced the film world in the past two decades as much as the Oscar-\, Globe- and Emmy-winning composer Hans Zimmer with his staggering compositions for films such as “James Bond”\, “The Lion King”\, “Pirates of the Caribbean”\, “Gladiator”\, “The Dark Knight”\, “Man of Steel”\, “Inception”\, and “Interstellar”. \nHans Zimmer wrote the film scores of more than 200 movies\, won his second Oscar for “Dune” (2022)\, following his first Academy Award for “The Lion King” (1994). He named Ennio Morricone as his idol and role-model\, whose work will be featured with excerpts from the films “The Good\, the Bad and the Ugly” and “Once Upon a Time in the West”. Zimmer followed Morricone’s example of composing the film music often before – instead of after – filming\, and shaped the entire film. He changed the beginning of Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” for example\, and the world-famous director moved into the studio of Hans Zimmer. \nThe press has been giving enthusiastic response:“…What a successful event and ecstatic audience…”“…Fascinating how the spark jumped over at this concert…”“…Very impressive were the titles with large orchestra …” \nTHE HOLLYWOOD FILM ORCHESTRAThe Hollywood Film Orchestra has been created for this concert series and works usually with state Orchestras from Europe. It has performed in the leading music venues of the world\, from the Koncerthuset in Copenhagen to the Konzerthaus in Vienna\, from Großes Festspielhaus Salzburg to Salle Pleyel in Paris\, from Laeiszhalle Hamburg to Tonhalle Zürich. \nHans Zimmer™ is a trademarks of their respective owners. A pianist and organist well known to local audiences\, the artist has appeared on numerous occasions with the Elkhart County Symphony Orchestra\, the South Bend Symphony Orchestra\, the IUSB Philharmonic\, the Manchester University Symphony Orchestra\, and in recitals throughout the area. \nMrs. Weiss is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music at IUSB for the Raclin School of the Arts where she teaches organ.
