Season 79 opens with joy, color, rhythm, and community celebration in ¡Ritmo Botánico!, an outdoor musical experience serving as a prelude to Hispanic Heritage Month.
Featuring music by Moncayo, Piazzolla, de Falla, and Márquez, the concert celebrates both the musical traditions of Spain and Latin America and the enduring cultural impact Hispanic communities have had on Elkhart County for generations.
The region’s connection to Hispanic heritage stretches back to the mid-20th-century agricultural boom, when Mexican laborers arrived in northern Indiana through the Bracero Program to help meet wartime and postwar labor shortages. Many families later established permanent roots in Goshen and Elkhart County, helping shape the vibrant and growing Latino community that remains central to the region’s cultural and economic identity today.
The Symphony plans to involve local Hispanic community leaders and cultural representatives, strengthening the connection between orchestral music and the community it serves.
Symphony oboist Heidi Eash will be featured in Astor Piazzolla’s hauntingly lyrical Oblivion, adding a subdued yet intimate expression to an afternoon designed to celebrate movement, heritage, and shared cultural experience.
