As the season opener celebrates cultural connections, rhythm, and community, Duel Vi2lity plunges directly into the grandeur and intensity of the traditional orchestral canon. Anchored by Johannes Brahms’ towering Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 73—often referred to as his “Pastoral” Symphony due to its bright, sweeping melodies—the program highlights some of the most revered symphonic writing ever composed.
The concert opens with Vitality for Orchestra by acclaimed contemporary composer Gala Flagello, an energetic and brilliantly orchestrated overture-like work that immediately launches the evening with electricity and momentum. Flagello, an Ann Arbor-based composer known for her versatility and rapidly rising national profile, brings a fresh modern voice into dialogue with the classical masters surrounding her.
The evening also welcomes extraordinary young cellist Khari Joyner, whose rapidly ascending career has already included a performance for President Barack Obama at the White House. Joyner will perform on Camille Saint-Saëns’ rarely heard Cello Concerto No. 2, a virtuosic and technically demanding work he personally introduced to Dr. Soo Han.
Together, the program creates a concert rooted in tradition while showcasing the next generation of major artistic voices.
